Our First Café Looking back, my wife, Veronika, and I, Gerhard, remember vividly leaving our home in Austria in pursuit of that dream. Our first stop was Majorca, Spain, where we worked tirelessly for three months renovating our new restaurant. In February of 1991, we proudly opened The Palmen Café on the beach at the Playa de Palma.
Coming to America Our restaurant was a tremendous success, and after 7 years of hard work, we received an offer to buy it. We knew that selling would lead us closer to realizing our dream of one day opening in America, so we once again packed our bags and left the beautiful beaches of Spain.
After a stopover (and a well-deserved 2-year vacation) in the Dominican Republic, we began planning our relocation to the USA. While in the Dominican, we met and fell in love with our devoted Susi, a beautiful cocker spaniel. Her portrait welcomes you with good German brew and is the focus of the much talked-about mural on the entrance wall at The Schnitzel House.
In May of 1999, we finally set foot on American soil, and the following October we opened the Schnitzel House in Fort Myers Beach, Florida.
Home in America Our goal has been to serve good food in a casual dining atmosphere at reasonable prices. Our repeat clientele for the past 12 years have proven that we have reached that goal.
During our summer vacations, when our restaurant closes during off-season, it has been our good fortune to see America from coast to coast the American way, in our RV. As we have discovered, America is truly a beautiful country from sea to shining sea! Of course, we always squeeze in a summer trip to our own beautiful country of Austria to get together with family and dear friends.
An Invitation from Gerhard Please stop by when you are in the Fort Myers Beach area. My wife, Veronika, who, by the way, is also our Executive Chef, and I, Gerhard, would love to have the opportunity of serving you. Bon Appetit!
